'Garbage Settlements' To House Poor In Philippines
31 October 2006 - 12:00pm
A Canadian architect has been in the Philippines for the past year designing homes for the country's poorest citizens. His method utilizes whatever building materials can be found to create an easily constructed and long-lasting home.
"With the completed model now standing on the grounds of Cebu's University of San Carlos, and with how-to guides in comic-book style ready for distribution in the city, Mr. Stinson's team is poised to build 256 homes on a small tract of land purchased by a Roman Catholic order."
"Dubbed 'the garbage settlement' by the team, it will have some — but not all — of the qualities of the model home, which is designed to be modified for whatever land and materials can be found."
