Case tracking software needed !
I currently work for a small county planning department in Colorado. (rural & mountain) We are getting busier all the time and we need some type of software to track our cases. The problem is, we don't have any capital dollars. We have the basic MS suite of applications including Access. No one in the office unfortunately is a programmer.
What we are looking for in essence is project management software. We really need some way to track timelines and critical dates. Ideally, it would have some type of "tickler" mechanism to remind when certain items are due like agency notifications, neighboring property notifications, publications, etc...
We are not looking for something overly technical. We don't have any need for pert charts, gant charts, or pie graphs. Just a tracking mechanism. Also, it needs to be something where the data lived on the server and it was accessible by multiple users. If the cost was very reasonable, we might be able to justify it or get a grant. We do not have money for Blackbear or anything of that nature.
Any comments or suggestions are welcome.
Thank you.

MS Project
Try MS Project.
Disagree on MS Project
I would not recommend MS Project for this need.
I would experiment with MS Outlook to see if it met this set of needs.
It is extremely important, before implementing anything, to take the time to document your department's requirements, and make sure everybody agrees on the same set of requirements. This need not be timeconsuming or complicated, and it will save enormous frustration as you work with the software.

Disagree with MS Project too
I work with a commercial developer and we are currently looking for the exact same thing. I would suggest you look at Quickbase by Intuit. Its fits what we need but the cost is about $300/month for up to 10 users.
