A Prairie Home Companion
Indiana developers are hatching plans on suburban housing developments that will truly live up to quaint names like "Prairie Meadows" by actually building prairies in their developments.
Many environmentalists are applauding an emerging trend in Indiana housing development that is creating prairie land and integrating it with suburban housing projects. Though building a prairie can take away profits from developers by taking up valuable acreage, some are finding that the appeal of a nearby prairie is drawing many buyers and creating and overall successful project.
"The reason is a mix of practicality and idealism, as developers come to see the naturalized areas as proven problem solvers and prospective homeowners view them as neighborhood assets. Developer Karl Bandemer says the prairie will help deal with stormwater runoff."
