San Francisco Races To Halt Pedestrian Deaths

4 October 2000 - 2:00pm

California's most dangerous city for walking responds to the high pedestrian death rate with fines, ads, and high-tech.

San Francisco's "rate of pedestrian deaths and injuries, 124.1 per 100,000 residents, is nearly triple that of second-place Los Angeles." The city responds with steep fines and high-tech devices such as cameras at intersections and countdown walk signals. Also, a bold advertising campaign will start this week. Ads are designed to grab attention. For example, one featuring a senior citizen reads "I'm sorry I ran over your grandma but I didn't want to spill my latte."
