Miami Beach Struggles With The Cost Of Parking
Miami Beach's parking impact fee program collects a fee from developers or business owners who cannot or chose not to provide parking in the city's historic district. But sky-rocketing construction and land acquisition costs mean the city is faced with increasing the fee to $35,000 -- more than double the current price.
While renovations of historic buildings are current exempt from the program, the city is also considering tacking on parking requirements to those structures.
"Why are we creating this free pass in an area that is already developed? That's not right," said Planning Board Chairman Victor Diaz.
To compensate for the rising cost of providing parking structures, the city is proposing to hike its impact fee to $35,000 per space.
