Moscow Goes British
A new housing development in Moscow takes its inspiration from the Russian elite's affection for all things British. The largest housing development since the fall of Communism will recreate an English village with a view of the Kremlin.
Catering to the whims of the upper-class, a new housing development has been approved that will recreate the experience of an English town -- from the pubs to the red phone booths -- right in the middle of Moscow.
Despite the city's rampant poverty and lower class slum conditions, Moscow's largest housing development erected since the fall of Communism will be available only to the richest of homebuyers.
The project is playing off the English-enchanted Russian elite who travel to London for shopping and general excess. The new Moscow development hopes to replicate that destination within Russia.
"Yet some are already questioning how authentically British the new project actually is. They argue that the buildings themselves, though undoubtedly swish, are typically nouveau Russian. Grandiose, with just a hint of oppression, they seem designed to project wealth and only the richest will be able to afford the apartments, half of which will have views of the Kremlin."
