Convention Center Quandry in Boise
1 August 2006 - 12:00pm
Controversial Boise convention center plans face location and financing hurdles.
"Boise(Idaho)is exploring ways to build and pay for a different Downtown convention center than the one proposed by the Greater Boise Auditorium District, despite the district's opposition to the location and a likely lawsuit by critics...A convention center would be the first step in turning a mostly barren stretch of former Union Pacific Railroad right-of-way between 9th and 15th into a Downtown showcase that could feature a new Discovery Museum, a major new hotel, residential housing and new businesses."

My Opinion
Why are people so opposed to change in the midwest and the south? I think this project would add to that area. But of course, people think change brings the end of the world, so Boise may not get the convention center it really needs, in a great area that would contribute greatly to local foot traffic, night life, and entertainment.

Convention Center History
First off, Boise is in the northwest. Secondly, the existing convention center is and has been adequate for all of it's 10+ years. I agree that it would be an added bonus to the city, as the project would finally build something on land that has been vacant for decades. The reality of the situation is that, Idahoans are practical people and the need for the facility has not been proven by those in favor of the proposal.
