High Fare Transit

There is no published research that asks households what level of transit service would be necessary for them to sell one of their vehicles and how much they would be willing to pay for that level of service. The average household spends around $4,000 annually on each vehicle it owns, whereas annual transit expenses are a minuscule portion of that. For example, a monthly MUNI pass in San Francisco, which allows for unlimited transit ridership in the city, is $45. If households were to spend on transit what they spend on personal vehicles, transit systems would much more closely approximate vehicles' speed and convenience and should attract millions of new riders. Comments welcomed.
