Building Green Affordable Housing In NYC
20 April 2006 - 9:00am
South Bronx affordable housing goes big and goes green.
In a neighborhood famed for urban blight in the movie, "Fort Apache, the Bronx," a 174-unit affordable housing complex will be built. On April 19, Women's Housing and Economic Development Corproation (Whedco) broke ground on the environmentally-friendly complex. High-efficiency boilers and 100 shade trees will keep energy costs low, and a green roof system will reduce air pollution and absorb storm water runoff. Whedco President Nancy Biberman explains that the building's tenants, "do not have the money to take a break from city life and be in a place that's green and quiet and beautiful. If people can't afford to go there, then we're going to bring it to them."
