The Great Quake Of 1906

The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 and the subsequent fire devastated the city known as "Paris of the West" and ranks as one of the nation's worst disasters in history.
"About 3,000 people died as a result of the 1906 quake, most in fires that spread quickly through the ruins...Today the San Francisco area is home to 6.5 million people, but remains vulnerable to major earthquakes...Buildings in modern San Francisco are described as earthquake resistant, not earthquake-proof."
