California's Economic Development Support MIA

6 April 2006 - 12:00pm

Since the state dismantled its economic development agency, its piecemeal efforts compare poorly to other states' coordinated strategies, as shown in the state's poor showing at the biotech industry's largest trade show.

Twelve governors are attending BIO 2006, but not Gov. Schwarzenegger. "Matt Gardner, president of the Bay Area's biotechnology association BayBio, said the issue is not how the state approaches BIO 2006, but how it approaches economic development overall." California has chipped in $2,500 toward the California pavilion, compared to host state Illinois' estimated $1 million contribution. What should states do for economic development? Support it, lead it, or let the private sector and local governments handle it?
