Sierra Club Criticizes Large Sale Of Public Land

15 February 2006 - 2:00pm

Carl Pope, Executive Director of the Sierra Club, comments on the Bush administration's plan to sell 300,000 acres of public land.

"The Bush administration's proposal to auction off National Forest and other lands is shameful. These lands not only belong to you and me, but they also belong to future generations, and they should not be sold off to the highest bidder for development. And there is no reason why the world's biggest economic power should have to sell off parkland to make ends meet...No responsible homeowner would sell off the foundation on his house to pay his mortgage."

Even if the report overestimates the costs by a factor of two and underestimates the tax-benefit by a similar amount, the conclusion would be pretty much the same: destination resorts cost local government and taxpayers money.
