Historic Tacoma Church Pressured To Sell

MultiCare Health System wants to buy the property for $6 million -- twice the appraised value -- while a small group of preservationists object.
"MultiCare sits in a concentration of historic churches; First Methodist is the most significant of them architecturally...It features a modernized Gothic design with square towers and large stained-glass windows that create a 'luminous temple quality...[an] architectural masterpiece [it is] one of the great interiors in the city.'"
MultiCare has made plans to erect a new church and community center, which would cost a total of $15 million, in addition to buying the property, although it would only pay for a portion of the cost.
