Demand remains particularly strong for spaces with tech-friendly amenities like high-speed Internet access and redundant power supplies.
According to a count released Wednesday by researchers at Merrill Lynch, the pace of office construction rose sharply in 2000, an increase fueled almost entirely by demand for space in cities with a high concentration of technology firms.
