Albany struggles with the challenges of historic preservation. Despite progress, some are worried about failure to capitalize on heritage tourism.

Albany’s historic-preservation record has improved over the last decade, but frustrations and failures continue...Community support for historic buildings is not always there, however. On other occasions, Albany’s citizens not only take the opportunity to dance on history’s grave, they sell off the bones... The point seems to be that, despite gains, historic preservation is still a harder sell than it should beâ€"and often not a priority for city leaders or residents. For every triump...[there's] a historically unique distillery buried under tons of concrete."
