Big Box Stores Adopting Unusual Urban Formats
One chain increasingly tailors its stores to the urban market by including two levels, escalators, and structured parking.
Until recently, all Target stores were the typical single-story boxes with surface parking. But in the last half-decade, Target has built or acquired 35 multilevel stores with structured parking and another 8 stores with parking underneath. [While Wal-Mart has ] so far has resisted radical changes to its building designs...[the] trend is growing...Many of the stores have been constructed in key shopping districts of major metropolitan areas and downtowns..."

Target: Friend or Foe?
The article doesn't mention that many of these new Targets only get built with subsidies. I know for sure that the Minneapolis store got substantial TIF money from the city, and I believe the Chicago one did as well.
And I don't mean to equate Republicans with pro-sprawl policies, but if *you* do, you may be interested to know that most of Target's political donees are Republicans.
Moreover, Target is only marginally better than Wal-Mart in terms of fair benefits and wages.
On the other hand, I'd guess that Minnesota has higher corporate taxes than Arkansas, and hopefully we'll get rid of Gov. Pawlenty so it stays that way.
