Recovering From Flooding: A Lesson From History

26 September 2005 - 12:00pm

Princeville, NC, is a rural town ravaged by floods throughout the 20th century. Their experiences with natural disasters provides a perspective of what can happen next in New Orleans and other towns near the Gulf.

Princeville is no New Orleans. There is no tourism economy, less historic architecture and no 'girls gone wild' partying. However, the tie that binds them together is the impact to residents who live at or below the poverty level and the questionable political response. New Orleans can probably learn a few tricks from this small rural community.

"Princeville showed that with government and private aid and determination of residents, a town can be rebuilt and made better."
