Bicycling, Urban Design May Help Quell Obesity

While a recent study observed climbing obesity rates across the county, Oregon saw no change. A study attributes this to the state’s strong emphasis on bicycling, walking, and urban design.

A study by the Trust for America’s Health showed rising obesity rates throughout the nation with the exception of Oregon. The study’s authors attribute this distinction to Oregon’s emphasis on urban design, which encourages more bicycling and walking. One obesity expert remarks that “research in the field has moved away from the notion of personal responsibility to the idea of creating environment that foster healthy living.”
