With mid-sized cities like Charlotte gaining population, developers are looking at the alternatives to suburban living.
"The Carolinas, particularly Charlotte, has been a hotbed of suburban growth. A booming uptown could counter some of the growing pains felt in the 'burbs. Uptown building generally doesn't require the new roads and utility lines needed in subdivisions. New buildings on old parking lots would boost property tax revenues."
