Birmingham Could Lose Public Transit

The city of Birmingham, AL. owes the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority more than $2 million in back pay.
"The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority could shut down buses and trolleys Aug. 31 when it is left with only $48,000 on which to operate, officials said Tuesday.
David Hill, interim executive director of the BJCTA, said a recently hired comptroller discovered a $1.9 million surplus did not exist nor did a three-month cash reserve."
