There's Still Hope For HOPE VI

David Gest argues that the HOPE VI public housing program still has benefits that outweigh its costs, despite attempts to end the program.

"Although HOPE VI has its flaws and requires reform, it should not simply be abandoned. Ultimately, we must choose between maintaining the substandard status quo of failed public housing, or dramatically improving the lives of a majority of residents while improving efforts to house those displaced. By providing a relatively small amount of seed money, around $500 million a year, the government can spark private investment in affordable housing and continue to improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans."

These practices are also inequitable since they force non-drivers to subsidize parking costs, reduce travel options for non-drivers, and reduce housing affordability.
