San Francisco approves. a $3.5 billion public works project to upgrade a century-old water system.
San Francisco's city finance committee approved a $3.5 billion public works project to upgrade a century-old water system that leave customers without water in the event of a major earthquake.About 2.4 million people in San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Alameda counties rely on the system for water. The contract has been awarded to a private firm. Critics says the city could do the work itself at a lower cost.
