Toronto's Hungry In Midst Of Food Desert

The lack of grocery stores is making access to healthy food almost impossible for residents in many neighborhoods.
The Toronto Food Policy Council has identified neighbourhoods where "you can go in any direction and 'not find a food store anywhere,'... even though the area is largely made up of seniors and low earners who don't have a car to drive to one." Gentrification is partly to blame as low-income earners are pushed further and further into the suburbs, where stores are only accessible by car. "Planners have to ensure there is water, shelter and sewage when they build a new subdivision, but nowhere does anyone say we really have a legal responsibility to make sure people have access to food."
