Reusing Antebellum Courthouses

16 May 2005 - 12:00pm

Turn of the century courthouses in the South are changing with the times, while retaining their sense of history.

"There's a variety of things that counties have done with their historic courthouses, said Jack Pyburn, a restoration architect in Atlanta who specializes in classic courthouses...

Newton has some financial departments in theirs. Cherokee's provides space for the tax commissioner, planning and zoning and some minor court functions.

Gwinnett's houses the Parks and Recreation board and features art exhibits. DeKalb's historical society occupies the first floor. The Fayette Chamber of Commerce uses that county's old courthouse."
