A military regime's attempt at conservation worries experts.
"Ancient kings celebrated their faith and power by building tall and lavish brick monuments adorned with mural paintings and sculptures. Now the military dictators who run this country are adding their own structures, constructed from poured concrete...
Conservationists and travel industry executives in the country condemn the project privately, but none will criticize the government for fear of retribution from one of the world's harshest military regimes.
Even some foreign researchers outside the country refuse to make their views public for fear of losing access to the country through visa denial."
