Why do long-time residents of a traditional rowhouse neighborhood resent garages?

A Philadelphia traditional rowhouse neighborhood has seen an upsurge in new residential development with garages. The garages are resented by longtime residents, as they take "the life out of a street", and reduce on street parking and limit the space for street trees.
