San Francisco Considers Congestion Pricing

29 March 2005 - 7:00am

Several city leaders are considering a downtown toll zone where drivers would be charged to enter the city center.

"As first reported in The Examiner, the San Francisco County Transportation Authority, which administers The City's traffic funding, is applying for a federal grant to study the idea. It has alternately been criticized by downtown business interests and praised by public transit advocates as a way to speed up local buses.

In 2003, London traffic planners, facing downtown speeds of 10 miles per hour, began requiring drivers to buy an $8 pass before entering the city's downtown during the hours of 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m."
