Citizen Land Use Initiative Axed By Florida High Court
17 March 2005 - 2:00pm
Florida State Supreme Court ruled that a proposed amendment to Florida's constitution to give voters final say over land use amendments can't go on the 2006 ballot.
"The citizen initiative, which called itself 'Hometown Democracy', would have required voter approval for any changes to plans that cities and counties adopt to manage development. City and county commissions now hold that power. The State Supreme Court reviews citizen initiatives to make sure they deal with only one subject and are fairly explained in ballot title and summary. The court does not consider the merits of proposals.

Evidence is observable in cities across the country, however, that urban regeneration only comes with the reclamation and restoration of old neighborhoods, not through demolition and landbanking.
