Michael Gamble and W. Jude Leblanc offer new models for the redesign of America's commercial strips.

The authors use an eight-mile stretch along Buford Highway in Atlanta, Georgia for their study, and ask:

"How can we as design practitioners be ambitious, committed, and fiercely realistic about one of the most significant challenges to the profession, the rehabilitation of America's default greyfields? We strategically chose greyfield sites to force speculation on the relationship between architectural projects, public policy, and community design."

No matter how one wanted to organize the ideal city, housing security would be part of it. No community can function effectively if large numbers of its residents are regularly displaced or perpetually at risk of being displaced.
