London-style Congestion Pricing For San Francisco?

17 February 2005 - 8:00am

San Francisco Transportation Authority is asked to study implementing congestion charging for downtown San Francisco.

Currently the SF transit agency, known locally as MUNI, is experiencing a major operating budgetary shortfall, resulting in the suggestion that adult fares be raised from $1.25 to $1.50. Due to the efforts of the active pro-transit lobby that urges the onus be placed on drivers, not transit riders, an interesting proposal has arisen to do just that through a financial strategy not yet seen in the U.S.

"San Francisco would become the first city in the nation to charge drivers just for driving in its chronically congested downtown under a sure-to-be controversial proposal being aired today....

...Chair of the San Francisco Transportation Authority, will ask the agency to study a downtown toll zone -- whereby drivers would need to purchase a daily pass to drive in The City's most congested streets -- as a potential solution to the Municipal Transportation Agency's woeful budget problems."

No matter how one wanted to organize the ideal city, housing security would be part of it. No community can function effectively if large numbers of its residents are regularly displaced or perpetually at risk of being displaced.
