Design Competition Promotes 'Granny Flats'

San Diego and other California cities hope to counter public opposition to "accessory dwelling units".

"The nonprofit Friends of San Diego Architecture stepped out of their demure role as host of monthly talks on architecture to become a big-city player. Volunteers took this leap by organizing a valuable design competition focused on "granny flats" or, as the folks at City Hall call them, accessory dwelling units built behind or attached to single-family homes.

"Accessory Dwelling Units: Inspired Solutions for Our Community" attracted 56 entries from professional designers and architecture students throughout California. They offer a mix of appealing, intriguing and sometimes highly feasible visions for gracefully weaving small apartments and cottages into neighborhoods of single-family residences."
