Taxing SUVs

New transportation bills in Pennsylvania call for a range of creative measures to encourage mass transit.
The Pennsylvania Transit Coalition (PTC) is a "statewide alliance -- comprised of representatives from labor, business, civic, religious and environmental groups -- [that] raises awareness of the need for dedicated funding for [Philadelphia public transit] and other flat-broke public transit systems in the" state of Pennsylvania. Constituents are pressuring representatives "for a mass-transit funding bill." One recent Democratic proposal "would raise the cost of annual vehicle registrations for passenger cars from $36 to $43, while SUV and minivan owners would have to shell out $50," in addition to an increase in gasoline tax.
