N.C. Triangle 'Must Do Something Beyond Cars'
As congestion becomes unbearable, what will it take for residents of North Carolina's sprawling Triangle to consider public transit?
"Experts say it will take a mix of alternatives -- if not some painful persuasion -- to get us to give up our car-dependent lifestyles. Government agencies, employers and developers are pushing three approaches:
...Most white-collar commuters and Triangle suburbanites have never seen the inside of a city bus, and they are targets for a new regional transit network. Starting in 2008, the Triangle Transit Authority and city governments plan to integrate commuter trains with park-and-ride lots and buses. By 2020, they aim to add fast buses for trips between Triangle cities, using dedicated express lanes to zip past rush-hour traffic jams."
