Fastest Growing Counties Deliver Bush And New Development Strategy
5 December 2004 - 1:00pm
Ninety-seven of the nation's 100 fastest growing counties supported George W. Bush and delivered half of the president's 3.5 million-vote victory margin.
One barely-noticed result of the November election points the way toward a new bottom-up national growth strategy that emphasizes local wisdom, a willingness to invest, an allegiance to environmental conservation, and an understanding that communities do not have to roll over to sprawl. How communities face up to rapid demographic, economic, and environmental changes is now, arguably, the only vital public interest conversation in America that liberals and conservatives can engage without rancor.

For the past half century we have been building communities for the wrong reasons. We built them to sell cars. This created all sorts of problems.
