Land That Is Lost

Reflecting on what might have been for a scenic mile of Lake Michigan shoreline---that could have been a public park, instead of condos.

Twenty years ago, a stretch of waterfront along Lake Michigan could have become another jewel in greater Milwaukee’s "emerald necklace," adding to chain of public parks along the lakeside. Unfortunately, budget deficits and County Board shortsightedness interfered with the purchase of the property for public enjoyment, and the land ultimately was privately developed for condominiums. Though it’s too late now, perhaps it can be a lesson for the future, as Whitney Gould observes.
