California is the nation’s largest dairy state. With annual production at $3.6 billion, the dairy industry is the largest agricultural sector in California.

After years of welcoming the dairy industry with open arms, San Joaquin Valley counties are now encountering legal, political and environmental obstacles when considering new dairies. As a result, permitting of new and expanded dairies has slowed in some key jurisdictions, and a proposal for a huge dairy complex in Kings County has been shelved. All of this frustrates dairy operators, who are the larget sector of California's giant agricultural industry.
