Why Did Russia Support The Kyoto Protocol?

The Economist analyzes the politics and economics behind the Russian government's decision to approve the Kyoto Protocol.
"This week, the post-Soviet Russia of President Vladimir Putin provided another victory for the environmentalists. On Thursday September 30th, Mr Putins government approved the Kyoto protocol, the 1997 treaty that aims to curb greenhouse gases. With Russia in, the treaty can finally come into effect, seven years after it was agreed.
Not everyone will cheer its survival. Beloved of environmentalists, the treaty is disdained by many economists. "
