Shade is rediscovered in Phoenix after half a century of near-death by air conditioning.
What's the most prized architectural feature in a city that basks in 300 days of sun annually? In Phoenix, whatever casts a shadow. Forgotten or ignored by recent generations that have grown accustomed to the ubiquity of air conditioning, architects and planners are now recognizing shade as a solution to the city's heat island problem.
