The European Council has set out to become the world's most competitive economy by 2010, while still focusing on sustainability.
"In an effort to show European commitment to sustainable development, the following year the Council revised the original planning to include a number of environmentally-focused indicators. Not only did the plans authors believe in a strong economy, but they believed it could be achieved in a sustainable way."
