Encouraging Public Participation In Urban Planning

25 August 2004 - 2:00pm

A non-profit makes ublic participation in urban planning seem less like a "chore."

"Democracy is a beautiful thing, but having a say in how the future of your city is planned can be a chore. You have to sit through long meetings listening to developers and city planners drone on through interminable presentations. Public comments are usually restricted to the end of any meeting, by which time even the most dedicated citizen is likely to feel sore in the derriere and ready to head for the exits.FutureHeights, a nonprofit organization in Cleveland Heights, has a better idea."

All of that only scratches the surface of what's wrong with this study. The idea that complex urban development patterns and human behavior can be meaningfully studied according to one primary criteria — density — is wrong from the start.
