ASU Is Reshaping Downtown Phoenix

13 July 2004 - 5:00am

The expansion of ASU to a brand new campus in downtown Phoenix has the potential to revitalize the city's moribund downtown.

"[T]he architects say the same thing: It's rare for anyone to have a chance to do something like this, to go into the stomach of a city and completely redesign it..."

Architects were asked to come up with concepts for the downtown campus, based on only a few simple requirements:

  • The campus must be within a five-minute walk of a light-rail stop.
  • The university's buildings must be designed for use by not just university folks but by the general public.
  • The campus itself must not feel walled off from the community; it needs to be a place that invites the community in to use it.
