Tax Us, Please!

Library patrons in Salt Lake City ask for a library tax to preserve levels of service.

Despite Utah's conservative political views and depressed economy, there is one group in Salt Lake City begging for a tax increase: library patrons. The library needs to raise $1.7 million or else cut back library hours, adult programs, and subscriptions to magazines and books. The proposed tax increase would be $12 extra on a $175,000 house, which amounts to "six scoops of ice cream, six loaves of bread, or a CD." The library board and City Council will also discuss whether or not Internet filters should be used.
