Winston-Salem Planning Board Rejects Wal-Mart
16 May 2004 - 9:00am
In a city where big-box retail has been approved without much discussion for years, the Planning Board of Winston-Salem, NC, sends a message that the community may be ready to take a different path.
"The planning board voted 6-3 to recommend denial of Wal-Mart's plan to build a 223,000-square-foot supercenter...Planners could not remember the last time that the planning board rejected a large commercial development such as Wal-Mart...Some small-business owners said that a new Wal-Mart Supercenter would revitalize the Old Town community, an area that has seen too many stores vanish, taking with them much-needed jobs."
