Cinema Proposal Sparks Debate

In Redwood City, CA, a downtown cinema complex is being designed to blend in with surrounding historic buildings, but also comes with a five story garage.
Redwood City's leaders concede that the city's sleepy downtown, with antique shops and jewelry stores, needs other retailers. A 20-screen cinema and retail complex planned in downtown will try to blend into its historic surroundings by using stuccof and terra-cotta in warm earthy colors. Some merchants are enthusiastic but others worry about traffic and parking problems. The Redwood City Planning Commission meets to discuss the downtown cinema project at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 1 at the council chambers, 1017 Middlefield Road.
