Fresno County has 443,000 licensed drivers -- and almost as many parking spaces. Is it time to change zoning codes?
Fresno code demanded 400 stalls for the Frenso Wal-Mart approved at Palm and Herndon avenues. But the retail goliath, known for its ample parking lots, plans 1,100 stalls to serve a 141,000-square-foot store. Fresno is following a US trend toward overbuilding parking lots, at the cost of creating unattractive "dead space" throughout the County.
