An Ambitious Plan For Adpative Reuse of Edmonton Mall
City planners and transportation officials might call it a dream come true.
It's an ambitious vision. Turn an old, abandoned mall surrounded by a huge expanse of asphalt into a livable community, complete with green spaces, courtyards, shops, restaurants and easy transit access. According to Brice Stephenson, head of transportation planning for the city, this huge long-term project will make it "a lot easier for us to justify" the planned extension route of the LRT line. The project plan includes a mix of housing types, from townhouses aimed at families to high-rise apartments. By concentrating residents in a tall, narrow space with underground parking, developers will leave "more room for pedestrian-friendly green spaces, sidewalks and courtyards," says project planner Armin Preiksaitis.
