Greenbelt Proposed Around Toronto

23 December 2003 - 11:00am

Development is banned in the fast-growing Ontario region known as the 'Golden Horseshoe'.

"Development will be banned for a year on a huge swath of land around the Golden Horseshoe slated one day to form a permanent greenbelt. The one-year ban is to give the new provincial Liberal government the breathing space to come up with a long-term plan to control urban sprawl in the area... 'Within 15 years, it will be the third largest urban region in North America after New York and Los Angeles.' "

All of that only scratches the surface of what's wrong with this study. The idea that complex urban development patterns and human behavior can be meaningfully studied according to one primary criteria — density — is wrong from the start.
