Santa Cruz's "Safe Sleeping Zones"
3 July 2000 - 8:10am
Police have begun to crack down on homeless areas that were previously declared "safe sleeping zones" by the City Council.
The Santa Cruz City Council designated several industrial areas as safe sleeping zones, but may withdraw the decision after local residents complain that the designation is bringing new homeless into the City. The city's plan to install dumpsters and toilets was not implemented for fear that it would create a homeless camp, disrupting tourism and commerce.
