New Report Supports BART Expansion to San Jose

29 June 2000 - 8:45am

Report suggests that BART expansion from Fremont to San Jose would lure 44,800 commuters onto BART.

The report, issued by the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, suggests that the 21.7-mile extension could eventually carry nearly 78,000 weekday riders. Project proponents, including San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales, say the report is proof that subway expansion is a solution to traffic problems on Highways 680 and 880 into Silicon Valley. County supervisors and project opponents charge that planning of the project has been largely closed to the public.

Its very unsuitability for an urban center justifies its current usage as a suburban or ex-urban pattern.
