City Targets Renters For Redevelopment
3 October 2003 - 12:00pm
Ventnor, NJ, tries to reduce density and renters in a "blighted" neighborhood.
"In Ventnor, the Hispanic, Indian and Asian newcomers crowd into single-family homes carved up into multifamily apartments. The rents are affordable, the area safe. All of which makes Ventnor's plans to "redevelop" the 26-block area - and demolish 17 buildings - seem suspicious.Officially, the officials say they are acting in the name of progress.Paying owners $12,000 to $22,000 to convert to summer-only rentals will ease crowded conditions, the mayor and others insist."
